Overview
Cisco 3600 Series
NM-16A, NM-32A, NM-1FE-TX,
NM-COMPR, NM-4E, and NM-4T
Introduction
A single platform strategy that enables customers to integrate
various networks as well as various external customer premises
equipment (CPE) and peripheral devices into a single chassis
offers tremendous advantages. The benefits range from simplified
training, reduced complexity, a single management and
configuration tool, and, perhaps the most compelling of all, a
significantly lowercost of ownership. The Cisco 3600has evolved
into the multi-function platform at the branch, with the ability to
support dial access to the network as well as traditional
LAN-LAN routing in the same chassis. This product
announcement describes the features of new network modules
that are available on the platform.
In late 1996, the Cisco 3600 series was introduced as
a family of modular, cost-effective, high performance, dial access
solutions targeted at regional and branch offices and small to
medium-size Internet service providers (ISPs).
The integrated routing capabilities of the platform deliver
complete remote access solutions to a growing number of dial
access users. Both the Cisco 3620 and 3640 eliminate the need to
purchase separate equipment for remote dialup or WAN
connectivity, translating to cost savings and investment
protection.
In addition to this announcement, in early 1997, Cisco
announced further extensions to the capabilities of the platform.
Specifically, four new capabilities were announced to reinforce
Cisco’s ability to deliver complete remote access solutions,
including the single-port Ethernet network module, the 56/
64-kbps WAN interface card with integrated channel service unit
(CSU) and DC versions of the chassis.
Yet another series of modules for the multi-function platform
at the branch will become available soon. The following
capabilities are being announced for the Cisco 3600.
Features at a Glance for New Modules
NM-16A, NM-32A Features at a Glance
• Module requires a single slot in a Cisco 3600 series
• NM-16A has 16 asynchronous serial interfaces, the NM-32A
has 32
• Each port operates at speeds up to 134 kbps with full speed
available on all ports simultaneously
• The 16 ports are cabled with two custom “octopus” cables,
terminating in 8 ports, each with an option of physical
endpoints, including RJ-45 and DB25 (the 32-port module has
four such cables)
• Shares interface cables with the Cisco 2509-2512
• An LED indicates when the network module is “ENabled” for
operation
• A single LED for each port lights up when that port is
transmitting/receiving data.
