Configuration of the Network
Use commands and methods of the previous exercises to assign IP addresses
using Figure 2 to complete the configuration of the network. For assigning IP
addresses use the IP addressing topology diagram in Figure 1. Note: use Class B
(255.255.0.0) subnet masks for FastEthernet 0/0 addresses.
6. Cisco Discovery Protocol
In this section, you will learn how to discover connected and neighboring
network devices, and how to establish basic network connectivity. To learn
more about neighboring devices we will be using the Cisco Discovery
Protocol (CDP.) CDP is a proprietary tool that enables network user to
access a summary of protocol and address information about other devices
that are directly connected to the device initiating the command.
CDP runs over the data link layer (L2) connecting the physical media to the
upper-layer protocols. Because CDP operates at this level, two or more CDP
devices that support different network layer protocols (i.e. IP and Novell
IPX) can learn about each other. CDP is enabled by default in your router.
For this lab exercise you use the same network topology as shown above in
Figure 1.
The routers should be fully configured with IP addresses at this point. If not,
go back to the previous exercises and configure the interfaces.
a. Viewing Adjacent Neighbors
Connect back to Router r1 and perform the following commands in the next
exercise.
