Preparing for Installation
This chapter describes the general equipment, safety, and site preparation requirements for installing
PA-E3 port adapters.

Parts and Tools Required
You need the following tools and parts to install a port adapter. If you need additional equipment,
contact a service representative for ordering information.
PA-E3 serial port adapter and one of the following:
VIP2-15(=) if you are installing only one PA-E3 port adapter; otherwise, we recommend a
VIP2-40(=) or VIP2-50(=).
Catalyst RSM/VIP2-15(=) if you are installing only one PA-E3 port adapter; otherwise, we
recommend a Catalyst RSM/VIP2-40(=).
Cisco 7100 series router with at least one available port adapter slot.
Cisco 7200 series router with at least one available port adapter slot.
Cisco uBR7200 series router with at least one available port adapter slot.
Cisco 75-ohm coaxial serial interface cables. (The PA-E3’s 75-ohm cables are available only
from Cisco Systems; they are not available from outside commercial vendors.)
Number 1 Phillips screwdriver and a 3/16-inch flat-blade screwdriver (for VIP2 and
Catalyst RSM/VIP2 installation only).
Your own ESD-prevention equipment or the disposable grounding wrist strap included with all
upgrade kits, field-replaceable units (FRUs), and spares.
